Washington—DC—May 8, 2006—Paper prescriptions may soon be a thing of the past for doctors. Rhode Island doctors’ electronic prescribing habits today earned the state the SafeRx award for writing the highest percentage of e-prescriptions in the country. In addition to being ranked #1 in the nation for e-prescribing, three Rhode Island doctors (Dr. Christine Rayner, Dr. Diane Siedlecki and Dr. Conrad Granito) received top awards for their individual e-prescription use. All three doctors use InstantDX’s OnCallData™ service, one of the nation’s most advanced electronic prescribing services, available to over 265,000 doctors.

“InstantDx is excited that our e-prescribing service OnCallData could help Rhode Island reach this milestone in healthcare, and we applaud Governor Donald Carcieri for his leadership in encouraging statewide adoption of e-prescribing. We are committed to continuing to support Rhode Island’s e-prescribing initiative in a meaningful way,” said Dr. Allan Weinstein, Chairman and CEO, InstantDX.

E-prescribing has been shown to significantly reduce healthcare costs by decreasing medication errors and identifying potentially life-threatening drug interactions.  It also helps doctors and pharmacists better monitor an individual’s medication history, giving them real-time, secure access to clinical information.

Aimed at improving patient safety through electronic prescribing, the SafeRx award is the first ever nationwide ranking of electronic prescribing sponsored by the National Association of Chain Drug Stores, the National Community Pharmacists Association and SureScripts™. The award goes to the top 10 e-prescribing states in the nation and to the three physicians in each state who are top users of e-prescriptions. Nationally, doctors using OnCallData’s e-prescribing service received 12 of the 30 SafeRx physician awards, including all three physician awards in Rhode Island.

“More doctors use OnCallData over any other e-prescribing service in Rhode Island because our software allows them to send prescriptions within 30 seconds from any web-enabled device. Our eRefills program allows doctors to refill in even less time, giving them more time to devote to patient care,” added Weinstein.

OnCallData has an exclusive agreement with Lifespan, Rhode Island’s largest physician services organization, to be the only e-prescribing service used in clinics affiliated with the Rhode Island Hospital System. It is also the only e-prescribing system used in the hospitals’ residency programs.

OnCallData allows doctors to use any web-enabled device to send a legible prescription or approve a refill to any pharmacy within seconds. With OnCallData doctors can conveniently and rapidly review a patient’s medication history or check drug- to-drug interactions, potential drug allergies, and drug formulary information.  On average, doctors and their staff using OnCallData’s e-prescribing software can save up to three hours a day that was previously spent with the pharmacy on the phone or at the fax machine. OnCallData’s software is encrypted, allowing for confidential communication of patient information between the doctor and the pharmacist. Another critical advantage of OnCallData is its interoperability with the practice software which the doctors already use in their offices.
